A housing association in Stoke on Trent has rejected plans
by Newham council to relocate some of its poorest benefit claimants to the West
Midlands. Newham council claims that,
following a government cap on housing benefit payments, it can no longer afford
to house tenants. Whilst it is tempting
to drag Newham, kicking and screaming, into the 19th century, it has
to be pointed out that sending your poor to the colonies is no longer regarded
as acceptable.
